“Over the past decade, the pair have built the most powerful political machine in Texas โ€” a network of think tanks, media organizations, political action committees and nonprofits that work in lock step [sic] to purge the Legislature of Republicans whose votes they canโ€™t rely on.”

“Like the Koch brothers, the Mercer family and other conservative billionaires, Dunn and Wilks want to slash regulations and taxes. Their endgame, however, is more radical: not just to limit the government but also to steer it toward Christian rule.”

As of December 2024, Forbes estimates Dunn and his family’s net worth at $2.2 billion. Forbes notes that Dunn’s Crownquest is one of America’s largest privately-owned oil companies and pumps 140,000 barrels daily from fields in the Permian basin in west Texas. Political Spending

Texas Monthly reported that Tim Dunn had become “the largest individual source of campaign money in the state by far,” describing that until recently, his “main tool for exerting influence has been the Defend Texas Liberty PAC, to which he has given at least $9.85 million since the beginning of 2022. This is nearly all the money he contributed to Texas races over that span, and most of it was raised by the committee.”12Russell Gold. “The Billionaire Bully Who Wants to Turn Texas Into a Christian Theocracy,” Texas Monthly, March 2024. “Texas, which has few limits on campaign spending, is home to a formidable army of donors. Lately Dunn has outspent them all. Since 2000, he and his wife have given more than $29 million to candidates and PACs in Texas. [Farris] Wilks and his wife, who have donated to many of the same PACs as Dunn, have given $16 million. Last year, Dunn and his associated entities provided two-thirds of the donations to the state Republican Party.

“The duoโ€™s ambitions extend beyond Texas. Theyโ€™ve poured millions into ‘dark money’ groups, which do not have to disclose contributors; conservative-media juggernauts (Wilks provided $4.7 million in seed capital to The Daily Wire, which hosts ‘The Ben Shapiro Show’); and federal races. Dunnโ€™s $5 million gift to the Make America Great Again super PAC in December made him one of Donald Trumpโ€™s top supporters this election season, and he has quietly begun to invest in efforts to influence a possible second Trump administration, including several linked to Project 2025.”

According to ProPublica, Dunn and Wilks financially supported their preferred Republican candidates ahead of the 2024 Texas primaries. At the same time, organizations linked to the pair funded advertisements criticizing opposing candidates for not being sufficiently right-wing. More than two dozen statehouse candidates who received financial backing secured victories in the March primaries. Glenn Rogers, one of the opposing Republican candidates, told ProPublica: โ€œYou canโ€™t be in politics long without being influenced by them in one way or another.โ€16Ava Kofman. โ€œA Pair of Billionaire Preachers Built the Most Powerful Political Machine in Texas. Kerby Anderson, Host: “Now, some of our listeners might say, well, the only perfect government we’re going to get is when Jesus returns again, and we have the new heaven and the new Earth. But does the Bible maybe at least give us some inferences that make us able to maybe judge government?

“Because right now you have some. Well, Bernie Sanders, he says, you know, the solution is socialism. Everybody’s equal. And then you have Ted Cruz and others that are arguing, well, no, we think a free market makes much more sense and a republic. So how, how do we evaluate that?”

Tim Dunn, Guest: “Well, the real biblical approach to government is that, as you say, the ideal is a โ€ฆ kingdom, with a perfect king. But pending that, the ideal is a self-governing society.”

Dunn spoke at an event hosted by Midland Bible Church where he discussed the rapture:40Jesus Is Coming,” Midland Bible Church, October 31, 2021. Archived .mp4 on file at DeSmog.

[00:38:43] “The key thing is, it’s going to happen, and we need to prepare. Okay. So and we need to be ready at all times. But I do want to spend some time proving the rapture is real. So first: the reality is there’s already been a bunch of raptures, and the Bible predicts many more, not just one.”

Dunn went on:

[00:42:02] “Christ’s return to Earth is spoken of in the Old and the New Testament. We see it in Revelation 19-11: ‘Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself.’โ€“So much for the idea that the God of the Old Testament is different than the God in the New Testament.โ€“’He was clothed with a robe, dipped in blood, and His name is called the Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. [Revelation 19:11 (NKJV)]’ So here’s an invasion. That’s an invasion of a heavenly army. And Jesus is at the head of the invasion.”

He also discussed end times in his sermon:

[01:13:40] “‘For this they willfully forget: that by the Word of God, the heavens were of old,’โ€“Now we’re now learning in science that everything starts with intelligence. Isn’t that interesting since God spoke the word into existence?โ€“’and the Earth standing out of water and in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. [II Peter 3:5-3:6 (NKJV)]’

“This has already happened once. Don’t forget that. ‘But the heavens and the earth [sic] which are now preserved by the same word,”โ€“It’s the word of God that’s preserving our Earth. Isn’t that comforting?โ€“’are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. [II Peter 3:7 (NKJV)]’ It’s going to happen again. First time with water, this time with fire. So shouldn’t we be ready?”

He added:

[01:15:20] “This is the will of God, our sanctification. ‘..looking for and hastening the coming the day of [the Lord],’โ€“The better we live, the faster it’ll come.โ€“’because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless, we, according to his promise, look for a new heavens and a new Earth in which righteousness dwells. [II Peter 3:12 (NKJV)]’ Won’t that be awesome?”

[…]

[00:55:02] “God is a consuming fire. ‘…taking vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.’โ€“The word obey means listen to. So we’re talking here about unbelievers.โ€“’These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power. [II Thessalonians 1:8 (NKJV)]'”

“A recent disparagement is a claim that I support and am a leader in something called ‘Christian Nationalism,’ a made-up label that conflicts with biblical teaching,” Dunn wrote.

“Our primary identity as believers is as a member in the Body of Christ. This is an expression of plurality, with each person being a unique part of the Body, united by one Head, who is Christ. ‘Christian’ is sufficient, because Christ is the Head and the Center, and believers spiritually unite together in Him.

“Embracing a spiritual identity as a Christian-Something is to make the ‘Something’ preeminent over Christ. That conflicts with the core tenets of Christianity. Embracing a Christian-Something term conflicts with the biblical teaching that Christ is the center and focal point of our Faith.”

Dunn posted the following on Facebook:48โ€œThe upcoming election should not be treated like a popularity contest,โ€ Facebook post from Tim Dunn, November 21, 2020. Archived .png on file at DeSmog.

The text read as follows:

“The upcoming election should not be treated like a popularity contest between individuals. Each candidate for president operates with a team of hundreds, and the prospect of appointing thousands more.

“This November election offers a choice between a Marxist path pushed by the Democratic Party versus a continuation of the American heritage of self-governance. The Marxist vision is tyranny, with government making our decisions, managing our affairs, and ultimately telling us what we are allowed to believe. Marxism is founded in atheism. It opposes, and will not tolerate the Christian notion of family, with parents raising children in the fear of the Lord. Marxism is responsible for massive death and human misery throughout history. It has always promised utopia, but has only delivered death.

“It is a lie with dire consequences. For now it is a lie that can be chosen. But once chosen will not be easily unwound.

“If you value the human dignity to choose, you must recognize that humans will make some bad choices. Concentrating the power to choose into the hands of a few only guarantees that the consequence of their bad choices will be calamity.

“Donald Trump has endured a barrage of false charges and negative publicity without altering his course of keeping promises about his appointments and his vision. There are no living humans who are perfect. But choosing a Marxist future is a catastrophic decision. Talk to anyone who fled Venezuela or Cuba who endured the consequences of that decision for their countries. If America chooses this vision, to where will we flee?

“The question before us is not ‘Do you approve of Donald Trumpโ€™s moral history?’ It is not even ‘which candidate has the most faults?’ The real choice is ‘Do you want a Marxist vision for America that crushes human dignity, or to continue to be a self-governing nation that lifts human dignity?'”

Tim Dunn participated in an AFPI-sponsored panel, โ€œFighting Climate Extremism & Keeping the Lights On.โ€ During this event, Dunn said that calling carbon dioxide a pollutant is “[00:31:00] totally bogusโ€ and that โ€œ[00:30:42] Carbon dioxide causes the plants, the Earth, to green. Itโ€™s not a pollutant,โ€ he said. โ€œ[00:30:53] If you want your plants to grow twice as fast, you pump CO2 into your greenhouses.โ€60โ€œFighting Climate Extremism & Keeping the Lights On,โ€ YouTube video uploaded by user Carla Sands on May 30, 2023. Later, he said that โ€œ[00:02:09] It would be ideal if we could get rid of this โ€˜CO2 as a pollutantโ€™ business,” adding that he hoped a Trump presidency could use executive orders to reverse the classification of carbon dioxide as an air pollutant: “[01:02:00] I hope we have a E.O., every E.O. we can, to curb all this silliness about CO2 emissions.โ€61โ€œFighting Climate Extremism & Keeping the Lights On,โ€ YouTube video uploaded by user Carla Sands on May 30, 2023. Dunn said that Biden-era energy policy is a โ€œ[00:11:33] design to cause people to not be able to move, to not be able to make choices on their own and put all the power in the hands of central planners, bring America down and our enemies up,โ€ and later as โ€œ[00:28:53] a Marxist plan.”62โ€œFighting Climate Extremism & Keeping the Lights On,โ€ YouTube video uploaded by user Carla Sands on May 30, 2023. During the panel, Dunn criticized Black Rock and ESG investing:

“[00:46:54] …JPMorgan. And we called them. And so we got on with some of their people, and they said, ‘Well, look, here’s the deal.’ Ah, this is probably two years ago, something like that, maybe three, I don’t know. And they said, ‘Well, here’s the deal. We came within this much of losing a shareholder initiative that would have been far worse than this. So basically, our shareholders are demanding that we do this. So we don’t really have any choice.’ Okay.

“Now, where did that come from? It came from BlackRock and these funds, and it’s not their money, but they’re voting on behalf of a bunch of people that they’re going to hurt. They’re being paid to help those people, and they’re hurting those people. That’s just the bottom line. So we’ve got a really broken structural system there whereโ€ฆ

“It’s really the same thing as Congress. Congress has given their proxy to a bunch of bureaucrats to make laws, and crimes, by the way, they can make crimes. Can you believe that? We have bureaucrats who can make crimes? I mean, that’s to me, that’s something we got to do, it’s like bureaucrats can’t make crimes, period.”63โ€œFighting Climate Extremism & Keeping the Lights On,โ€ YouTube video uploaded by user Carla Sands on May 30, 2023. Empower Texans supported an anti-trans ‘bathroom bill’ in 2017, which was ultimately defeated by Texas business interests who feared the bill would spur an economic boycott of the state.
