Liberty Institute (India)
Background
The Liberty Institute is a free market think tank located in New Delhi, India. Founded in 1996, it describes itself as โdedicated to empowering the people by harnessing the power of the market.โ and it seeks to โbuild understanding and appreciation of the four institutional pillars of a free society โ Individual Rights, Rule of Law, Limited Government and Free Market.โ1โLiberty Institute Mission & Vision,โ Libertyindia.org. The Liberty Institute claims to conduct research and advocacy on public policy issues and its areas of interest include development economics, education, environment, health, security, and trade. It also organizes conferences and has a โgrowing publications programme.โ
LI has been criticized by environmental groups including Climate Revolution for claiming that passive smoking isn’t harmful and for โbeing employed by oil companies to question climate change.โ3(Press Release). โClimate change deniers spreading misinformation: Environmental groups,โ Sanjay Kumar (ANI), June 18, 2011. In an interview with the Competitive Enterprise Institute, LI president Barun Mitra says that the Atlas Network that inspired him to start his own think tank and โthe seeds of Liberty Institute were planted in late 1995, early 1996.โ According to Mitra, Atlas was โinstrumentalโ in getting the Liberty Institute started: โfirst with intellictual inputs and incentives, and then seed funds and organizational support.โ5โLiberty Institute (India): One-on-one with Barun Mitra, Presidentโ (PDF), Competitive Enterprise Institute, July 12, 2005. Stance on Climate Change
โSome people insist that ‘renewable energy’ and ‘sustainable development’ must be the future for Third World countries,โ says Barun Mitra, president of the Liberty Institute in Delhi, India. โBut poor people need sustained development โ not sustainable development. They need to protect their families from real, immediate, life-threatening risks โ instead of being condemned to squalor and premature death, to address distant, hypothetical dangers like global warming.โ6Roy W. Spencer, Paul K. Driessen, and E. Calvin Beisner. โAn Examination of the Scientific, Ethical and Theological Implications of Climate Change Policyโ (PDF), Interfaith Stewardship Alliance, 2005. Archived .pdf on file at DeSmog.
โThe climate always changes. The issue is whether it is man induced, anthropogenic global warming or it is a natural cycle of various factors from solar cycles to the ocean temperatures. I think the issue is not so much the science. I think the fundamental problem is the tendency to use science for a particular policy outcome. I think the science is never and answerโฆ . Science cannot give us an answer on anything.โ7โIs Climate Change Real?โ Transcript from โFace The Nationโ with Sagarika Ghose.
