Background

Smith runs a blog called “Ecomyths” that criticizes green energy projects and questions the existence of man-made climate change.

His name also appears on Senator James Inhofe’s list of “prominent scientists” who are skeptical of the existence of man-made global warming.

Senator Inhofe, as an active climate change skeptic, has been a leading public figure in the fight to stop the federal government from accepting the claims of a scientific consensus on global warming.

Stance on Climate Change

According to a presentation by Smith (.ppt), “The global warming scare has little foundation in fact,” and “not only is climate change natural, temperatures today are neither unprecedented nor abnormal.” He also believes that “the science of climate change is very complex and beyond our present level of understanding.”8Dr. L. Graham Smith. “The Dynamics of Discourse: Ideology, Science and Public Policy in the Kyoto Debate” (.ppt), Retrieved February 17, 2012, from the Smith’s profile at the University of Western Ontario.

Key Quotes

“Environmentalism is no longer the ideology of reform, of rebellion, of revolution: it is fully co-opted as the dominant dogma of stasist conformity and control.”9is the damage already done?Ecomyths, October 29, 2011.

Key Deeds

March 4, 2008

Smith is listed by the International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) as a “climate expert” who signed the Manhattan Declaration on Climate Change.10CLIMATE EXPERTS WHO SIGNED MANHATTAN DECLARATION,” International Climate Science Coalition. Accessed February 17, 2012.

The Manhattan Declaration contends that “’global warming’ is not a global crisis,” and that “current plans to restrict anthropogenic CO2 emissions are a dangerous misallocation of intellectual capital and resources that should be dedicated to solving humanity’s real and serious problems.”

December 13, 2007

Smith was a signatory to a 2007 open letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon that denied man-made climate change. The letter states “it is not possible to stop climate change, a natural phenomenon that has affected humanity throughout the ages.”11Open Letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations,” Science & Public Policy Institute, December 13, 2007.

April 2006

Smith signed a 2006 open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper that denied man-made climate change and urged governments to stall progress on climate policy.

The letter’s view on global warming is that the “climate changes all the time due to natural causes and the human impact still remains impossible to distinguish from this natural ‘noise.’”
