Investigating Ireland’s Influential Ag Lobby

About the Series

The Republic of Ireland – often dubbed the Emerald Isle – boasts a global reputation for its grass-based agriculture, exporting 90 percent of its meat and dairy produce to over 100 countries.

But the intensive food and farming sector is heavily polluting its air, waterways and soil through excessive levels of nitrates in fertilisers and manure. Ireland is also “well off track” in meeting its EU and national climate targets for 2030 – in large part due to the methane from Ireland’s unchecked dairy production.

In the run-up to the next general election – expected by March 2025 at the latest – DeSmog’s new series investigates how Ireland’s intensive farming industry holds sway over nearly every sector of society, raising concerns over entrenched vested interests standing in the way of a more sustainable future for farmers – and the planet.
