Heartland Institute: Don't Rely on Us for Significant Decisions

Just stumbled upon a site called Climate Search, a disinformation centre run by the Heartland Institute. The Heartland Institute suggests that it is โ€œa genuinely independent source of research and commentary.โ€ It must, therefore, be a total coincidence that its independent opinions accord so perfectly with the assumed leanings if its board members, which include representatives from ExxonMobil, Philip Morris and General Motors. In any case, Climate Search says it has a two-fold mission:

โ€œTo become for its customers, the Internetโ€™s fastest, most convenient, most comprehensive, and most reliable (my emphasis) source of climate change research and commentary; and for its partners, the fastest, most convenient, and most effective way to publish and market their work on theย Internet.

Then again, the site also runs an all-purpose disclaimer that says:

We are not responsible if information we make available on this site is not accurate, complete, or current. The material on this site is provided for general information only and should not be relied upon or used as the sole basis for making significant decisions without consulting primary or more accurate, more complete, or more timely sources ofย information.

It’s hard to know what to emphasize in that paragraph. But they could have saved a lot of words with a Monty Python-style general warning:

โ€œWe’re the Heartland Institute: Run Away!!!!โ€
