House Committee on Natural Resources Investigation

In 2022, the U.S. Congressโ€™s House Committee on Natural Resources published a report, โ€œThe Role of Public Relations Firms in Preventing Action on Climate Change,โ€ which highlighted two ExxonMobil campaigns by Group SJR. The Natural Resources Committee analyzed two applications Group SJR submitted for consideration for public relations industry awards. The award submissions detailed two of Group SJRโ€™s campaigns for ExxonMobil. One submission described how Group SJR ran ExxonMobilโ€™s โ€œEnergy Factorโ€ website and stated that the purpose of the website was to โ€œhighlight ExxonMobilโ€™s commitment to innovation, research, and emissions-reducing technologies.โ€ It also explained that the website was aimed, at least in part, at โ€œskeptics of the brand.โ€ The Committee on Natural Resources report found:17โ€œThe Role of Public Relations Firms in Preventing Action on Climate Change,โ€ Appendix 1, House Natural Resources Committee Staff Report, September 14, 2022. The second award application focused on Group SJRโ€™s 2019 โ€œNatural Gas PB&Jโ€ video ads for ExxonMobil. Group SJR/ExxonMobilโ€™s Algae Biofuel Research

ExxonMobil released content promoting its work in Guyana, and Group SJR created some of it. In 2020, Group SJR produced the campaign โ€œOpportunity Begins with Energyโ€ for ExxonMobil. The campaign included a short film about a Guyanese man whose life was changed by gaining access for the first time to reliable energy. Stance on Climate Change

In 2019 Group SJR created two campaigns for ExxonMobil that mimicked popular social media trends.

Group SJRโ€™s โ€œNatural Gas PB&Jโ€ video ads for ExxonMobil targeted Gen Z audiences. The videos were based on Buzzfeedโ€™s โ€œTastyโ€ videos, popular with young audiences at the time. These videos compared the complementary flavors of peanut butter and jelly to natural gas as a complement to renewable energy: โ€œNatural gas and renewable energy work great on their own but better together. Kind of like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.โ€ The videos ran on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter.
