Alex Jones briefly attended Austin Community College, taking part-time classes after he graduated from high school in 1993.¹ ²

Background

Alex Jones hosts The Alex Jones Show, a nationally syndicated talk show, as well as the website Infowars.

Jones has been described as “the most prolific conspiracy theorist in contemporary America” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit which tracks hate groups. Rolling Stone magazine has described him as “the most paranoid man in America” and New York magazine described Jones as “America’s leading conspiracy theorist.”³ ⁴ ⁵

According to his profile on Infowars:⁶

“Jones is dedicated to libertarian and constitutionalist ideas, in addition to what he has coined ‘1776 worldwide’ – promoting a true culture of liberty, transparency and freedom on a planetary scale to empower humanity, while vehemently opposing Agenda 21 and the globalist threat to national sovereignty.”⁷

Infowars claims to have the goal of “Seeking the truth and exposing the scientifically engineered lies of the globalists and their ultimate goal of enslaving humanity.”⁸

Jones has been criticized by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which has labeled him an “extremist.” In an interview, the SPLC’s Heidi Beirich described Jones as a “gateway drug for people who end up in harder aspects of the movement,” such as neo-Nazi groups.⁹ ¹⁰

SPLC notes the Alex Jones Show has about two million weekly listeners, and is syndicated to 60 radio stations as well as Infowars.com and PrisonPlanet.com. The Alex Jones YouTube channel had more than two million subscribers before it was removed.

In his show, Jones regularly stirs up fear of “globalist” forces.

SPLC writes: “The way Jones sees it, shadowy groups within the U.S. government orchestrated — or at least refrained from preventing — the 9/11 attacks, the Boston Marathon massacre, the bombing of Oklahoma City’s Murrah federal building, and the mass shootings in Aurora, Colo., and at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. He has even suggested that President Obama was responsible for the 2013 Oklahoma tornado outbreak.”¹¹

Jones has interviewed numerous climate change deniers on his show including Lord Christopher Monckton, others include Marc Morano, John Coleman and James Delingpole. Jones has promoted the idea the United Nations seek a “global government” and has described the UN as “the founders of the global tyranny” when criticizing the 2009 Copenhagen climate change negotiations.¹²

Jones also sells Infowars-branded products, among which include T-shirts, books, and Infowars-branded dietary supplements and cleansers. He also offers a $1,797 “Infowars Life Select” one-year “survival food kit.”¹³ ¹⁴

Conspiracy Theory & Fake News

Jones has made many claims that acts of terrorism and attacks taking place in the U.S. were staged by the government, including the 9/11 attacks, the Columbine school shooting, the Oklahoma City bombing, the Sandy Hook shooting, and the Boston Marathon bombing, among others. Some have suggested that President Trump’s “dabbling into conspiracy theory” could be influenced by Jones. Austin American-Statesman reported that Jones “ might as well be the voice in Donald Trump’s head.”¹⁵ ¹⁶ ¹⁷ ¹⁸

Jones has also lent legitimacy to the debunked “pizzagate” conspiracy, saying “I may just have to take off a week and just only research this and actually go to where these places are and stuff,” Jones said. “Fact, I’m looking at getting on a plane. […] I can’t just say something and not see it for myself. They go to these pizza places. There’s like satanic art everywhere.”¹⁹ ²⁰

Alex Jones’s Infowars has been included on lists of “Fake News” sites, sometimes alongside Breitbart News. One list, created by an assistant professor of communication at Merrimack College in Massachusetts, was since taken down as “a safety measure in response to threats and harassment she and her students and colleagues had received.”²¹ ²²

Jones has also fought against the censorship of “fake news,” appealing to Trump for aid in 2016 in an online petition:²³

“In an effort to try and censor the liberty movement and free speech, the mainstream media is now attempting to label legitimate news sources like Infowars as ‘fake news’ to push towards a government-led shut down of Infowars.com,” Jones wrote on his website.²⁴

“We are calling on and asking President-Elect Donald J. Trump to take a stand against the establishment media’s ‘fake news’ attacks and to stop the impending censorship of independent media platforms like Infowars.com and others,” He wrote in a statement, which included a form where visitors can “ask Donald Trump to fight back against ‘fake news’ attacks.”²⁵

Some have also noted Jones as a moon landing denier, given that he had claimed “sources inside NASA” told him that “they put on some fake stuff for you—see, there was a lie. It’s not just ‘did we go’ or ‘didn’t we go.’ You were shown the tinker-toy stuff because you’re not supposed to see what they really got.”²⁶

Accuracy in Media has also described Jones’ Infowars.com as “a reliable outlet for pro-Russian propaganda.”²⁷

Stance on Climate Change

December, 2015

Shortly before the 2015 Paris climate talks, Jones delivered an “epic rant” on how he believed that the sun was “the complete driver” of the climate.”²⁸ ²⁹

Jones suggested that the goal of the climate talks is “global government” and “global taxes.”³⁰

“You’re a criminal gang who wants to make money on all human activities” he said.³¹

“The ice sheets have both gotten bigger. The planet’s going into a cold stage because the sun’s going partially dormant. It’s a known cycle. it was predicted by all the astrophysicists 50 years ago. […] The sun is the complete driver!”³²

Jones called President Obama and Hillary Clinton “literal demons.”³⁴

Jones said “We are dealing with demons here.”³⁵ ³⁶

In an interview with Lord Christopher Monckton on “Climategate,” Jones denounced an unspecified “they” —presumably mainstream climate scientists, the United Nations, and environmentalists—as “little Hitlers.” Holding up and waving a copy of Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment, Jones declares:⁵⁰

“I mean, they keep saying the science is all settled when they’re all manifest quack frauds who, all of them, write books about planetary governments forcibly cutting off resources to kill the majority of us, drugging our water supplies to sterilize us. I mean, these people are Hitlerian. And as you know, being a man of letters in history, that Hitler got his ideas from the eugenicists in England and the United States and that these are simply a bunch of little Hitlers masquerading as Liberal bleeding hearts. They are murderous, criminal control freaks.”⁵¹

Jones’ NewsWars website published an article by “alt-right” activist Paul Joseph Watson denying that climate change had any role in bushfires burning in Australia at the time. Watson wrote: “authorities in Australia are working on the premise that arsonists and lightning strikes are to blame for bushfires that have devastated numerous areas of the country, not ‘climate change’ as many global warming alarmists have claimed.” The argument was labelled “misleading” by the fact-checking website Climate Feedback, which said it “misunderstands that fires are exacerbated by hot and dry conditions and Australia is currently facing a severe drought amidst increasing temperatures.”⁵²

Climate change denier Christopher Monckton was a guest speaker on the Alex Jones Show, where he suggested he had found key flaws in the methods used by scientists to calculate rising levels of carbon dioxide. Regarding his new equation, Monckton said that “this is going to change everything,” although he went on to admit that he was having difficulty getting published in any scientific journals.⁵³

“The real idea of this climate change nonsense is to take America down,” said Monckton. “That’s the objective here — it’s got nothing to do with the climate.”⁵⁴

Alex Jones interviewed Christopher Monckton on Infowars. Jones compared Hillary Clinton to a “demon” during the interview:⁵⁵

“Clearly, when you have Wikileaks coming out, clearly when you see how truly nasty these hundreds of thousands of emails are, like you’d have to work even if you were a demon to write this nasty and this hateful. But it shows, it’s really a college of scumbags that have bad will, and they’re just manipulating people.”⁵⁶

”[…] I see total victory of Trump presses and does not back down. I think he absolutely must appoint an attorney general, which he’s doing, that will prosecute the Clintons. […] They’ve committed massive crimes. They must be prosecuted.”⁵⁷

Monckton said that he had personally met with Steve Bannon the last time he had been in the US. “I was very impressed by him,” Monckton said. “And I was glad […] when he pretty much ended up masterminding Trump’s campaign.”⁵⁸

November, 2016

According to Alex Jones, President Trump had pesonally thanked him and the Infowars audience for their support. Both Trump and Jones have promoted the idea of globalism, reported the New York Times. In Jones’s video, he pointed to the upcoming destruction of “the globalists that hijacked the country.”⁵⁹

“This is America battling back to restore humanity and to break the chains,” Jones said. “There’s not gonna be any détente. We know you’re scum, and we’re just here to let you know you’re scum.”⁶⁰

September 20, 2016

Alex Jones’ Infowars published a piece by Christopher Monckton, where Monckton claims that “The much-vaunted ‘climate consensus’ turns out to have been wrong all along.” Monckton claims to have found a “a very large and very serious error” that he had initially written about in the journal Energy and Environment (which has been a noted platform for climate change deniers).⁶¹

“The climate scare is now officially over. What scam will the totalitarians dream up next? The world will not be so willing to trust the profiteers of doom a second time,” Monckton writes.⁶²

December 2, 2015

Donald Trump appeared on The Alex Jones Show for a 30 minute segment. Jones strongly supported Trump. “What you are doing is epic, it’s George Washington level,” Jones told Trump.⁶³

Speaking to Jones, Trump said, “Your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down. You will be very, very impressed, I hope. And I think we’ll be speaking a lot.”⁶⁴

Alex Jones, on “special report” on Infowars, claimed to dissect “the greatest hoax of the century, ‘Man Made Global Warming’.”⁶⁵

“There is no consensus,” Jones said. “In fact, the facade of the consensus is collapsing.”⁶⁶

”[…] Bottom line: we have an authoritarian movement on the so-called left that is seeking to not just tax every form of human activity, and track it, but to also silence anyone that would dare challenge it. These people are not liberals. They are out-of-control authoritarians.”⁶⁷

Christopher Monckton was a guest on Alex Jones’ Infowars, speaking about “the role solar activity plays in global warming” in a video titled “Climate Tryanny Hits Australia.”⁶⁸

During the video, Jones and Monckton repeatedly mention “Agenda 21” as “Fascism’s new face”. “They’re a few years ahead of us in Australia under the climate tyranny,” Jones commented.

“They are trying to close Australia down,” Monckton claimed. “And the background to this, Alex, is Agenda 21, this UN program, all 14 chapters of it, which was first produced in nineteen ninety two at that ridiculous Rio Earth Summit. And the idea of Agenda 21 is to close down the economies of the West by saying that in the name of the environment, we must reduce the population of the Earth by nine tenths and we must do that, according to Bill Gates, by vaccination.”

Monckton later said to Jones:

“You know, it has been said by some that you are right on the extreme fringe. Well, hey, somebody occasionally has to stand out a little bit from the crowd to try and warn crowd of what’s about to hit them. And there is no doubt now that the governing class worldwide is increasingly tying itself together, using the excuses such as climate change, Agenda 21, environment, using gun control as something we can all unite behind. This is the kind of slogan you hear.”

When Jones asked Monckton “what do we do” with regards to “Agenda 21,” he responded:

“Well, I think the first thing is keep a very close eye on every environmental law that gets passed, because you’ll find that what Agenda 21 does is that it works chiefly at local level. What these agents of the UN have done is they’ve gone round to local authorities and convinced them, one by one, that they should implement Agenda 21 because no national government would go as far as that. And there’s an outfit called ICLEI, I-C-L-E-I, and if you’re local authority belongs to that organization, then, boy, are you in trouble. These are the new dictators. They operate by stealth. And their vice chairman recently said that in future, the individual must subject himself to the collective. And so this is straightforward, outright in-your-face communism, dressed up as though it were to do with the environment.

“I call them the traffic light tendency, the greens too yellow to admit they’re really red, but they’re operating bureaucratically through your local authority. And you need to find out and you need to get onto your local authority representatives, your local councillors, etc. and you need to say to them, that if they belong to ICLEI, you will vote for whichever party says that it will leave that organization and have nothing to do with Agenda 21. You have to get Agenda 21 onto the agenda of local elections and make it clear that any candidate who support Agenda 21 will not get elected by you. And once they all begin to realize that Agenda 21 is hated and feared by the people, as it should be, then they will break free […].”

Alex Jones expressed pro-gun control views in the wake of the Sandy Hook school massacre. He appeared in a televised debate with CNN’s Piers Morgan, telling him that taking away guns would result in government tyranny.⁶⁹

Jones yelled,

“1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms. It doesn’t matter how many lemmings you get out there on the street, begging for them to have their guns taken. We will not relinquish them. Do you understand? That’s why you’re going to fail. And the establishment knows no matter how much propaganda, the Republic will rise again when you attempt to take our guns.”⁷⁰

Alex Jones interviewed Lord Christopher Monkton in an hour-long series on the debunked “climategate” incident where climate researchers’ emails were hacked and then released to the public. Notably, nine independent inquiries by multiple agencies since arrived at the same conclusion: that the “climategate conspiracy” was nonsense.⁷²

Jones introduced Monckton as Margaret Thatcher’s “key policy advisor” with “so many other important key positions.” Jones said “we popped champagne last week when they came out, those emails.”⁷³

Monckton said that climate scientists “should not only be locked up for concealing and destroying data that had been requested under the freedom of information act by other scientists, they should also be locked up for financial fraud and international racketeering.” “Well said, sir,” Jones replied.⁷⁴

Monckton goes on to describe those mentioned in the emails as “malevolent, crooked scientists.” He added, “These are the people who, between them, have conspired to invent and then maintain the scare of global warming.”⁷⁵

Jones summarizes, “they talk about, temperatures are dropping, how do we fix it, how do we spin it? How do we hide the decline? […] I mean, this is racketeering.”⁷⁶

Again talking about the climate scientists, Monckton declares, “All of this scare comes out from these idiots and these crooks and these criminals.”⁷⁷

“It is a conspiracy from top to bottom,” Monckton said. “These people deserve to be locked up, and locked up for a very, very, very long time. And never, ever again to be allowed to hold any position of public trust or be paid a single penny of taxpayer’s money.”

[…]”I think we’re going to have to send some of them to the international criminal court for crimes against humanity,” he added.⁷⁸

After a commercial break, Jones declares that “man-made global warming is meant to destroy industrial society,” asking Monckton to expand on the supposed “global government” proposed by the UN.⁷⁹

Setting up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as a political body rather than a scientific one would be the Trojan Horse by which the UN would achieve its long-held ambitions of turning itself into a dictatorial world government,” Monckton replied.⁸⁰

“They want nothing less than total world domination […]” he added.⁸¹

I think there is, certainly, an element of deliberate desire to control population by killing people in large numbers, deliberately, as necessary. I think they don’t care about that as long as they’re not among those who get killed.”⁸⁴

“This is the key juncture with Copenhagen,” Jones says in the final portion of his video. He adds that in order to achieve a “victory” that “We must do everything we can. Calling in local talk shows, letters to the editor, calling Congress, supporting you [Monckton] when you go to Copenhagen. Because if we defeat them on this, does this not a deal a substantive, perhaps even a death blow to this global government tyranny?”⁸⁵

Monckton replies, “I think what we’re going to have to do is close down the United Nations […] We would all save billions if we shut down the UN and just about all of its hideous bureaucracies.”⁸⁶

Jonesc cut in with a conclusion, declaring the UN “a criminal menace.” “It must be dealt with,” Jones aid. “I agree; abolish it. Arrest the criminals. Charge them.”⁸⁷
