Credentials

Background

Copper is a Professor Emeritus of Paleobiology at the Laurentian University Earth Sciences department.

Copper was an Allied Expert to the now-defunct Natural Resources Stewardship Project (NRSP), and the organization described Copper as an “expert on pre-historic global climate patterns.”4Natural Resources Stewardship Project Allied Experts,” Archived February 9, 2007.

Stance on Climate Change

“We, the undersigned scientists, maintain that the case for alarm regarding climate change is grossly overstated. Surface temperature changes over the past century have been episodic and modest and there has been no net global warming for over a decade now. After controlling for population growth and property values, there has been no increase in damages from severe weather-related events. The computer models forecasting rapid temperature change abjectly fail to explain recent climate behavior.”5Climate Change Reality,” The Cato Institute. Key Deeds

March 30, 2009

Copper’s signature is displayed alongside a full-page ad funded by the CATO institute that appeared in numerous newspapers including the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune in 2009.

The advertisement criticizes President Obama’s declaration that “few challenges facing America and the world are more urgent than combating climate change,” stating that “with all due respect Mr. President, that is not true.”

The ad claims “there has been no net global warming for over a decade,” and that the dangers of global warming are “grossly overstated.”6Climate Change Reality,” The Cato Institute. Archived April 2, 2009.

March 2008

Signed the 2008 Manhattan Declaration on Climate Change, a document brought forth for consideration at the end of the Heartland Institute’s 2008 International Conference on Climate change.

Created by the International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC)—a group of climate skeptics directed by Tom Harris—the declaration concludes that “attempts by governments to legislate costly regulations on industry and individual citizens to encourage CO2 reduction will slow development while having no appreciable impact on the future trajectory of global climate change.”

April 6, 2006

Copper was a signatory of the 2006 open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, “Open Kyoto to debate,” which disputed the existence of anthropogenic (man-made) global warming (AGW) while urging inaction on climate policy.
