Smith runs a blog called โEcomythsโ that criticizes green energy projects and questions the existence of man-made climate change.
His name also appears on Senator James Inhofe’s list of โprominent scientistsโ who are skeptical of the existence of man-made global warming.
Senator Inhofe, as an active climate change skeptic, has been a leading public figure in the fight to stop the federal government from accepting the claims of a scientific consensus on global warming.
Stance on Climate Change
According to a presentation by Smith (.ppt), โThe global warming scare has little foundation in fact,โ and โnot only is climate change natural, temperatures today are neither unprecedented nor abnormal.โ He also believes that โthe science of climate change is very complex and beyond our present level of understanding.โ8Dr. L. Graham Smith. โThe Dynamics of Discourse: Ideology, Science and Public Policy in the Kyoto Debateโ (.ppt), Retrieved February 17, 2012, from the Smith’s profile at the University of Western Ontario.
Key Quotes
โEnvironmentalism is no longer the ideology of reform, of rebellion, of revolution: it is fully co-opted as the dominant dogma of stasist conformity and control.โ9โis the damage already done?โ Ecomyths, October 29, 2011.
Key Deeds
March 4, 2008
Smith is listed by the International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) as a โclimate expertโ who signed the Manhattan Declaration on Climate Change.10โCLIMATE EXPERTS WHO SIGNED MANHATTAN DECLARATION,โ International Climate Science Coalition. Accessed February 17, 2012.
The Manhattan Declaration contends that โ’global warming’ is not a global crisis,โ and that โcurrent plans to restrict anthropogenic CO2 emissions are a dangerous misallocation of intellectual capital and resources that should be dedicated to solving humanityโs real and serious problems.โ
December 13, 2007
Smith was a signatory to a 2007 open letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon that denied man-made climate change. The letter states โit is not possible to stop climate change, a natural phenomenon that has affected humanity throughout the ages.โ11โOpen Letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations,โ Science & Public Policy Institute, December 13, 2007.
April 2006
Smith signed a 2006 open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper that denied man-made climate change and urged governments to stall progress on climate policy.
The letter’s view on global warming is that the โclimate changes all the time due to natural causes and the human impact still remains impossible to distinguish from this natural ‘noise.’โ
