James Delingpole, among others, promoted a study by John Abbott and Jennifer Marohasy, both senior fellows at the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) in Australia. โ€œMost global warming is natural and even if there had been no Industrial Revolution current global temperatures would be almost exactly the same as they are now, a study has found,โ€ Delingpole wrote at Breitbart.108James Delingpole. โ€œDelingpole: Global Warming Is Almost Entirely Natural, Study Confirms,โ€ Breitbart, August 22, 2017. As Graham Readfearn reported at The Guardian, Marohasy also wrote about the study at the Spectator and at her own blog, claming that the research had shown recent global warming to be natural. The Drudge Report also linked to the article. Readfearn, who noted that the writers themselves did not consult other climate scientists on the paper, contacted five. โ€œThey variously summarised the research as โ€œjunk scienceโ€ and seriously flawed.โ€110Graham Readfearn. โ€œWhy the IPA’s claim global warming is natural is ‘junk science,โ€ The Guardian, August 25, 2017. Marohasy rejoined the IPA after being terminated from her position at the Central Queensland University (CQU) on July 1, 2015. โ€œIndeed universities can be so political, and in modern Australia so intolerant of dissent,โ€ Marohasy commented on her website. The IPA, which is one of the largest promotors of climate change denial in Australia, does not disclose funding. However, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that about a quarter of IPA’s $2 million in annual funding comes from corporations with a direct stake in the climate change debate.113โ€œAbout: Current Situation,โ€ Jennifer Marohasy. Delingpole interviewed climate change denier Christopher Horner on his โ€œDelingpole podcast.โ€ According to Delingpole, reporting on the interview at Breitbart, Horner โ€œhas the perfect insider perspective to explain whatโ€™s going on in the White Houseโ€ due to his position on Trump’s EPA transition team. โ€œNo other GOP presidential candidate โ€“ not Rubio, not Cruz โ€“ would have delivered on climate change in the same way as Trump has. They would, quite simply, have been overwhelmed by the swamp,โ€ Delingpole declared.120โ€œDelingpole: Solving the Mystery of How Donald Trump Got to be so Amazing on Climate Changeโ€ฆโ€ Breitbart, July 21, 2017. Archived July 21, 2017. Archive.is URL: https://archive.is/Co4TX

โ€œHereโ€™s what I firmly believe,โ€ Horner said. โ€œIโ€™m convinced that the penny dropped for others, as it did me, when Donald Trump gave his editorial board interview to the Washington Post. Itโ€™s often mocked โ€“ where he said: ‘I’m not a big believer in global warming. Not a big believer.’ And then he continued in a very important way. And if you follow the way Donald Trump speaks itโ€™s perfectly clear what heโ€™s saying. He said, ‘You know, a lot of people are making a lot of money off of this.’

โ€œHe was not saying this as a politician says it. (โ€˜And if we use spoons not shovels we can create even more jobsโ€ฆโ€™ That sort of playground thinking is very common among politicians.) And whatever anybody thinks about Donald Trump you can be confident of this. At 21, at Le Cirque, somewhere at some point, somebody who is making a killing off the rents of the global warming industry laughed it up a little too loudly or once too many times around Donald Trump. Because what he said to the Washington Post was ‘Youโ€™re robbing Peter to pay Paul. Goldmans is making a killing out of this.’ Thatโ€™s what I heard him say. Politicians normally fall for this. But not Donald. Instead โ€“ what I heard him say ‘Theyโ€™re making a lot of money out of this’ โ€“ he said: ‘Youโ€™re propping up, sometimes even standing up industries, to transfer taxpayer money to them. And he didnโ€™t go into Energy Poverty or the Economic Drag or the inefficiency or the opportunity cost or the 2.2 jobs. He just said: ‘Youโ€™re robbing Peter to pay Paul. A lot of people are making a lot of money off this.’ And to me he was saying ‘This is something of a scam.’ You can take his Chinese hoax comments, you can take hoax in any context but the fact is the way theyโ€™re playing out the global warming industry there are many scams involved and I think he was aware of this. I do think at one point somebody laughed a little too loudlyโ€ฆโ€121โ€œDelingpole: Solving the Mystery of How Donald Trump Got to be so Amazing on Climate Changeโ€ฆโ€ Breitbart, July 21, 2017. Delingpole wrote a Breitbart piece titled โ€œOnly Gullible Fools Believe that the Great Barrier Reef Is Dyingโ€ where he claims โ€œThe Great Barrier Reef isnโ€™t in the remotest danger,โ€ and that those who believe it is are โ€œpillocks,โ€ โ€œidiots,โ€ and โ€œeco loons.โ€122โ€œDelingpole: Only Gullible Fools Believe that the Great Barrier Reef Is Dying,โ€ Breitbart, April 10, 2017. Delingpole primarily criticized a study published in Nature by Terry Hughes of James Cook University in Queensland, who Delingpole calls โ€œthe main man behind the scare.โ€ Hughes had examined 2016 bleaching, as well as the previous incidences in 2002 and 1998.123Graham Readfearn. โ€œBreitbartโ€™s James Delingpole Denies Danger of Great Barrier Reef Bleaching โ€” Again,โ€ DeSmog, April 13, 2017.

DeSmog reported Delingpole primarily relied on the arguments of Jim Steele, who claimed the Hughes study was based on โ€œaerial surveysโ€ that โ€œcannot discriminate between the various causes of bleaching.โ€ However, the Nature study had stated analysis was based on โ€œaerial and underwater surveysโ€ as well as satellite data. Hughes told DeSmog by email:124Graham Readfearn. โ€œBreitbartโ€™s James Delingpole Denies Danger of Great Barrier Reef Bleaching โ€” Again,โ€ DeSmog, April 13, 2017.

โ€œSteele needs to actually read our Nature paper. We reported the extent of bleaching, measured both from the air and underwater โ€” the latter on 150 reefs.

Mass bleaching due to thermal stress is the only mechanism that can turn more than 1000km of a reef system white in the course of a few weeks.

In the Nature paper, we show the relationship between thermal stress experienced on each reef and the amount of bleaching recorded underwater by divers. We also ground-truthed the accuracy of the aerial scores, and found them to be highly reliable.

We also showed that satellite measurements of heat exposure matched the aerial bleaching scores as well as the underwater scores. The south didnโ€™t bleach in 2016 because it was cool, the north was the most severely bleached because it was hottest.โ€125Graham Readfearn. โ€œBreitbartโ€™s James Delingpole Denies Danger of Great Barrier Reef Bleaching โ€” Again,โ€ DeSmog, April 13, 2017.

James Delingpole is a contributor to the book Climate Change: The Facts published by the Institute of Public Affairs and featuring โ€œ22 essays on the science, politics and economics of the climate change debate.โ€ The Institute of Public Affairs, while not revealing most of its funders, received funding from mining magnate Gina Rinehart and at least one major tobacco company.166โ€œInstitute of Public Affairs,โ€ SourceWatch. Accessed May 27, 2015. Archive.is URL: https://archive.is/RtEoe

The book included essays and articles from a range of climate change skeptics, with contributors including the following:

According to Editor Alan Moran in a post at Catallaxy Files blog on Climate Change: the facts 2014, Ian Plimer, James Delingpole โ€œnotes how the climate believers so often accuse sceptics of lack of credentialsโ€ and โ€œdelves into the qualifications of the major promoters of the climate scare in the UK.โ€167Alan Moran. โ€œClimate Change: the facts 2014,โ€ Catallaxy Files (blog), December 16, 2014. James Delingpole announced the end of his days blogging for The Daily Telegraph. In his final post, Farewell, Knights of Delingpole โ€” and thank you trolls, Delingpole thanks his readers โ€œfor your technical expertise and advice (it prevented anyone ever noticing that I’m an English graduate and know NOTHING about science apart from, maybe, how to grow copper sulphate crystals).โ€168James Delingpole. โ€œFarewell, Knights of Delingpole โ€” and thank you trolls,โ€ The Telegraph, February 12, 2014. James Delingpole published an article in The Telegraph titled โ€œAn English class for trolls, professional offence-takers and climate activists.โ€ The article opens with a photo of one of the Nuremberg trials with the caption โ€œNot pictured: Monbiot, Flannery, Mannโ€ฆโ€ (as in George Monbiot, Tim Flannery, and Michael Mann) and a series of questions (emphasis added):169James Delingpole. โ€œAn English class for trolls, professional offence-takers and climate activists,โ€ The Telegraph, April 7, 2013. Archived January 11, 2014.

โ€œShould Michael Mann be given the electric chair for having concocted arguably the most risibly inept, misleading, cherry-picking, worthless and mendacious graph โ€“ the Hockey Stick โ€“ in the history of junk science?

โ€œShould George Monbiot be hanged by the neck for his decade or so’s hysterical promulgation of the great climate change scam and other idiocies too numerous to mention?

โ€œShould Tim Flannery be fed to the crocodiles for the role he has played in the fleecing of the Australian taxpayer and the diversion of scarce resources into pointless projects like all the eyewateringly expensive desalination plants built as a result of his doomy prognostications about water shortages caused by catastrophic anthropogenic global warming?โ€

While Delingpole wrote his answer to all of these questions was no, he also said that โ€œHanging is far too good for such ineffable toeragsโ€ and that โ€œIndeed, it would be nice to think one day that there would be a Climate Nuremberg.โ€ He defended his statements by claiming that he was using the phrases โ€œmetaphorically.โ€170โ€œJoe Romm. โ€œDenier Delingpole Wishes For ‘Climate Nuremberg’, Says ‘Hanging Is Far Too Good’ For Climate Scientists!โ€, ThinkProgress, April 7, 2013. Archived April 10, 2016. Archive.is URL: https://archive.is/2OOjV

Joe Romm at Thinkprogress suggested the Telegraph should retract and apologize for Delingpole’s article as it may violate the paper’s own terms and conditions against โ€œobscene, threatening, menacing, offensive, defamatory, [or] abusiveโ€ material.171โ€œWhy Conservatives Will Always Lose The War On Climate Change,โ€ Breitbart, April 9, 2016. Archived September 26, 2016. Archive.is URL: https://archive.is/trClD

According to Romm,

โ€œIf Delingpoleโ€™s piece doesnโ€™t count as ‘threatening, menacing, offensive, defamatory, abusive’ then it is quite safe to say that nothing does. It should be retracted, the Telegraph should issue an apology and then fire him.โ€

March 8, 2013

James Delingpole published an article in the Daily Mail describing the Met Office as a โ€œmenaceโ€ and also claiming that the office has โ€œfinally conceded what other scientists have known for ages: there is no evidence that ‘global warming’ is happening.โ€172James Delingpole. โ€œThe crazy climate change obsession that’s made the Met Office a menace,โ€ The Daily Mail, January 10, 2013. Archive.is URL: https://archive.is/Ed8Vg

Delingpole quoted the Global Warming Policy Foundation’s โ€œAcademic Advisor,โ€ David Whitehouse, who claimed that the Met Office was โ€œpanickingโ€ because โ€œAll the predictions theyโ€™ve been making about man-made global warming these past 20 years have started to come crashing about their ears.โ€173James Delingpole. โ€œThe crazy climate change obsession that’s made the Met Office a menace,โ€ The Daily Mail, January 10, 2013. Archive.is URL: https://archive.is/Ed8Vg

The Met Office replied to Delingpole, and attempted to correct โ€œa series of factual inaccuracies about the Met Office and its scienceโ€ that Delingpole’s article had included. According to the Met office, these inaccuracies included:174โ€œAddressing the Daily Mail and James Delingpole’s ‘crazy climate change obsession’ article,โ€ Met Office News Blog, January 10, 2013. Archive.is URL: https://archive.is/Q2N7W

  • Mr Delingpole then inaccurately states that the Met Office has conceded โ€˜there is no evidence that ‘global warmingโ€™ is happening’. We have not said this at any point.
  • He also states that the Met Office was trying to defend a narrative that the โ€œthe past ten years have been the ‘wettest decade ever’โ€. Again, this is not something the Met Office has ever said.
  • Also he quotes David Whitehouse of the Global Warming Policy Foundation saying that the Met Office ‘thinks weather forecasting is beneath it’ and that ‘climate changeโ€ฆ brings in more money’.
A cursory glance at our annual report and accounts (pdf) would reveal weather forecasting represents the vast majority of the Met Officeโ€™s contractual work on behalf of the public.

The Australian Press Council (APC) upheld a complaint on numerous grounds against The Australian newspaper, which had published an article by Delingpole about wind farms. In the article, Delingpole had quoted an anonymous sheep farmer as saying that the wind farm industry was โ€œbloody well near a pedophile ring. They’re f . . king our families and knowingly doing so.โ€175Graham Readfearn. โ€œAustralian Press Council Finds Against Climate Sceptic Columnists,โ€ Desmog, December 21, 2012. 176James Delingpole. โ€œWind farm scam a huge cover-up,โ€ The Australian, May 3, 2012. After the APC had published its findings, Delingpole wrote a response, also published in The Australian, where he said: โ€œI stand by every word of the piece – especially the bit about pedophiles. I would concede that the analogy may be somewhat offensive to the pedophile community.โ€177James Delingpole. โ€œWhere free speech is dead as the dodo,โ€ The Australian, December 12, 2012.

James Delingpole was one of the subjects of a BBC Two presentation titled โ€œScience Under Attackโ€ where Nobel Prize winning Sir Paul Nurse examined why climate change and other scientific theories have had public trust eroded.181โ€œScience Under Attack,โ€ BBC, February 19, 2011.

He interviewed scientists and campaigners from both sides of the climate change debate. Delingpole complained about the editing of his interview with Nurse because it focused on parts of the interview where, according to the Guardian, โ€œhe looks like an idiot.โ€182Tim Dowling. โ€œTV review: Horizon: Science Under Attack and Tool Academy,โ€ The Guardian, January 25, 2011. James Delingpole described an article on expert credibility in climate change, written by William R.L. Anderegg and others and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, as being โ€œbased on a petty, spiteful, Stasi-like blacklist produced by an obscure Canadian warmist โ€“ outrageously aggrandised by being published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.โ€186โ€œExpert credibility in climate change,โ€ Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 107, No. 27 (April, 2010).

Delingpole’s article on the paper was titled โ€œ‘Climate change sceptics have smaller members, uglier wives, dumber kids’ says new study made up by warmists.โ€187James Delingpole. โ€œ‘Climate change sceptics have smaller members, uglier wives, dumber kids’ says new study made up by warmists,โ€ The Telegraph, June 22, 2010. James Delingpole has been credited with coining the term โ€œClimategateโ€ to describe what climate skeptics have presented as a scientific conspiracy to manipulate data carried out by climate scientists. The scandal arose from a series of hacked e-mails from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia.188Christopher Booker. โ€œClimate change: this is the worst scientific scandal of our generation,โ€ The Telegraph, November 28, 2009.
