Background

Jason A. (Drew) Johnson is the founder of the Beacon Center of Tennessee, formerly the Tennessee Center for Public Policy Research. He served as president of TCPPR, until leaving in 2009. He remained a member of TCPPR’s board of directors. He was last mentioned on the group’s 2009 990 tax forms.3โ€œDrew Johnson – President,โ€ Tennessee Center for Policy Research. Johnson is also a senior fellow at the Taxpayers Protection Alliance and the National Center for Public Policy Research and formerly worked as a policy analyst at National Taxpayers Union.5โ€œDrew Johnson,โ€ LinkedIn. Accessed December 12, 2019. Archived .pdf on file at DeSmog.

Johnson was named executive director of Protect Internet Freedom in 2016. The group was created to โ€œpush back on new network neutrality rules.โ€ Its website no longer appears to be online.6John Eggerton. โ€œProtect Internet Freedom Names Drew Johnson Executive Director,โ€ Broadcasting+Cable, April 22, 2016. Before founding TCPPR, Johnson was a policy analyst at the National Taxpayers Union Foundation. He was also a former senior fellow at the Koch-backed Institute for Humane Studies and was a fellow of the Davenport Institute at the Pepperdine University School of Public Policy.7โ€œAdministration and Fellows,โ€ Pepperdine University School of Public Policy. While Johnson served as its president, TCPPR was featured by Mother Jones as one of the โ€œDirty Dozen of Climate Change Denial.โ€ At the time, Johnson denied that the group received any industry funding. Several years after Johnson left, beginning in 2016, the Center began to attract funding from the Charles Koch Foundation. It received $107,500 from Koch from 2016 to 2017.8โ€œDrew Johnson – President,โ€ Tennessee Center for Policy Research. Archived August 14, 2007. Archive URL: https://archive.ph/rztw9

Stance on Climate Change

September 2, 2016

Writing at The Daily Caller, Johnson suggested a Russian conspiracy around environmental groups:9โ€œThe Suspicious Backers Of The Latest Climate Change Hyperbole,โ€ The Daily Caller, September 2, 2016. Archived December 12, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/RCtau

โ€œIn fact, researchers have never established a connection between climate change and extreme weather events.โ€

[โ€ฆ]

โ€œThereโ€™s good reason to be suspicious about green activistsโ€™ motives for inventing correlations between climate change and extreme weather. Some, through a winding and sometimes opaque money trail, are financed by Russian authorities interested in undercutting American energy.โ€

[โ€ฆ]

โ€œThe next time green extremists exploit a tragedy by conjuring up a scientifically dubious link between climate change and a severe weather event, consider their motives. All too often leading environmental groups are promoting junk science that undercuts American interests in exchange for a payday linked to nefarious front groups and despicable dictators.โ€

January 21, 2014

In a Newsmax article, Johnson opposed a carbon tax:10โ€œEnvironmental Programs Devour Tax Dollars,โ€ Newsmax, January 21, 2014. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/yvN6a

โ€œMore and more, the leaders of the environmental movement โ€” the ‘Kings of Green’ โ€” are emerging as a pathetic mix of liars, frauds, hucksters, and hypocrites who are more concerned with lining their pockets off environmental hysteria than actually protecting Mother Nature.โ€

[โ€ฆ]

โ€œSchemes and fibs by environmental extremists like Al Gore, Tom Steyer, and leaders at Google are killing jobs, increasing the price of energy, devouring tax dollars, and threatening America’s energy independence โ€” all in an effort to make a quick buck.โ€

[โ€ฆ]

โ€œDespite his hypocrisy and poor record of environmental fortunetelling, Gore continues to push for a carbon tax, a sinister scheme that would cost tens of thousands of American jobs and squeeze the poorest Americans most as a result of price hikes to most every good and service imaginable.โ€

December 13, 2009

Johnson wrote the following in an article titled โ€œClimate Change ‘Cures’ are Worse than the Illnessโ€ at the Tennessean:11โ€œClimate Change ‘Cures’ are Worse than the Illness,โ€ The Tennessean. Republished by the Beacon Center of Tennessee. Archived December 12, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/NnzlZ

โ€œIf the Earthโ€™s temperature is changing in unnatural and unusual ways, and those climate oddities are, in part, a result of human activity, would taking radical steps that result in demolishing the economy of the developed world and the loss of millions of human lives in developing nations be worth reducing the Earthโ€™s temperature a fraction of a degree? Most reasonable people would say no. Given the exaggerations of the problems and the dangers of the policy remedies, it is clear that government solutions to climate change are a medicine far worse than the illness.โ€

2008 โ€“ 2009

In 2009, Mother Jones magazine listed TCPR among the 10 โ€œDirty Dozen of Climate Change Denial,โ€ a list of the โ€œ12 loudest members of the chorus claiming that global warming is a joke and that CO2 emissions are actually good for you.โ€12โ€œNo. 10: Tennessee Center for Policy Research (A.K.A. Carnival of Climate Change),โ€ Mother Jones, December 5, 2009. Archived December 12, 2019. Archive.ph URL:https://archive.ph/7Dlq9

At the time, while Johnson was president, TCPR was running the website โ€œCarnival of Climate Change,โ€ which described itself as โ€œa portal for bloggers who write on topics critical of current climate change alarmism and who question unsubstantiated discussions on global warming.โ€13โ€œNo. 10: Tennessee Center for Policy Research (A.K.A. Carnival of Climate Change),โ€ Mother Jones, December 5, 2009. Archived December 12, 2019. Archive.ph URL:https://archive.ph/7Dlq9 14โ€œContent Disclaimer,โ€ Carnival of Climate Change. Archived June 30, 2010. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/a33xA

The Carnival website promoted climate change denial blogs and groups such as Climate Audit, Greenie Watch, ICECAP, the New Zealand Climate Science Coalition, Watts Up With That, the World Climate Report, CO2 Science, the Science and Public Policy Institute, among others.15โ€œContent Disclaimer,โ€ Carnival of Climate Change. Archived June 30, 2010. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/a33xA

Speaking with Mother Jones, Johnson claimed Carnival of Climate Change was a minor side project that is โ€œnot supposed to be a hard news or hard research site.โ€ He added, โ€œWhat we put up there, or what is put up there [through an automatic news feed] isnโ€™t reflective of our research, our opinions, or our thoughts.โ€16โ€œContent Disclaimer,โ€ Carnival of Climate Change. Key Quotes

July 22, 2019

Johnson wrote at Newsweek:17Drew Johnson. โ€œTHE GREEN NEW DEAL ISN’T REALISTIC, BUT WE CAN STILL SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT,โ€ Newsweek, July 22, 2019. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.fo URL:https://archive.ph/wu3Ex

โ€œThe Green New Deal isn’t a serious proposal. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind have their place. But eliminating fossil fuels wholesale would prove prohibitively expensive.โ€

โ€œAn all-renewable future simply isn’t realistic in our lifetimes. A lower-emissions future isโ€”thanks largely to natural gas.โ€

April 6, 2019

Johnson opposed electric vehicle subsidies in an article he wrote at Chron. In the article, Johnson claimed electric vehicles don’t help the environment or, โ€œIn some cases, electric cars actually cause more carbon emissions than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, โ€œHe went on to repeat a common talking point of anti-EV front groups:18โ€œDREW JOHNSON: Electric vehicle subsidies donโ€™t help the environment,โ€ Chron, April 6, 2019. Archived December 14, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/WqwZP

โ€œItโ€™s time to phase out these unjustifiable tax breaks for the wealthy.โ€

[โ€ฆ]

โ€œAny CO2 emissions reduction, no matter how small, is welcome. But there are better ways to ‘go green’ than funding shiny new toys for Americaโ€™s upper class.โ€

March 6, 2019

Johnson wrote an article criticizing the Green New Deal at Fox Business:19โ€œAOC’s Green New Deal is proof that environmentalists can’t do math,โ€ Fox Business, March 6, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/J4P8e

โ€œThe Green New Deal is laughably unrealistic. If lawmakers implemented even a tenth of the plan, it would destroy the U.S. economy and impoverish tens of millions of people,โ€ he concluded.

May 31, 2017

Writing a The Daily Caller, Johnson argues that despite the health impacts of tobacco, one should consider the impact on tobacco growers in poor countries:20โ€œA World Without Tobacco Sounds Good, Until You Consider The Consequences,โ€ The Daily Caller, May 31, 2017. Archived Decmeber 12, 2019. Archive.fo URL: https://archive.ph/8Fjl8

โ€œA world with no tobacco might sound appealing to nanny state bureaucrats at the WHO, but it sounds like hell to millions of thriving farmers like Davison Tolopo and his family,โ€ Johnson concluded.

January 29, 2017

Johnson claimed the Russians were behind anti-fracking activism in the United States:21โ€œINTELLIGENCE: PUTIN IS FUNDING THE ANTI-FRACKING CAMPAIGN,โ€ Newsweek, January 29, 2017. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.ph: https://archive.ph/Qr6Fl

โ€œThe influence of Russian propaganda and the influx of money funneled from the Kremlin to many of America’s most extreme environmental outfits helps explain why anti-fracking attacks continue even though science has confirmed fracking poses no threat to public health.โ€

April 12, 2015

Johnson wrote an article opposing ozone emissions rules at The Washington Times:22โ€œNew emission rules would choke U.S. economy,โ€ The Washington Times, April 12, 2015. Archived December 14, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/EcTxI

โ€œOzone is a naturally occurring gas that helps shield the Earth from the sunโ€™s rays. But when ozone interacts with emissions from industrial factories, cars and electric utilities, it can cause serious health issues.

Fortunately, those health issues are not a real concern these days. Air quality in America is the best it has been in decades. Thatโ€™s what makes the EPAโ€™s destructive new ozone regulations so senseless.โ€

Johnson went on to quote research from the petroleum industry campaign Energy In Depth as supposed evidence that the EPA could be โ€œinflating the ruleโ€™s health benefits to justify federal overreach.โ€

Key Deeds

January 26, 2018

In an article at The Daily Caller titled โ€œEnvironmentalists Are Getting In The Way Of Making America Great Again,โ€ Johnson said โ€œradical environmental activistsโ€ were a cause of illegal immigration in the United States. Johnson argued, using the example of a mine in San Rafael, Guatemala, that environmentalists opposing the operation and causing shutdowns were leading to economic trouble in the region and promoting immigration to the US. Note that the mining operation would later face human rights violation charges, despite Johnson’s declaration that the lawsuit against the mine was over โ€œunsubstantiated claims.โ€23โ€œEnvironmentalists Are Getting In The Way Of Making America Great Again โ€” And This Is How,โ€ The Daily Caller, January 26, 2018. January 17, 2018

Johnson wrote an article at Newsmax defending oil giant ExxonMobil. Regarding lawsuits by state Attorneys General against the oil company that suggested it had misled investors about how much it knew about climate change, Johnson claimed โ€œThe suits are a shady part of the environmental leftโ€™s plan to shake down industry to pay for coastal reclamation and perhaps whatever other public works projects they envision but for which they donโ€™t want to raise taxes.โ€25โ€œExxon Turns Tables on Liberal Climate Bullies,โ€ Newsmax, January 17, 2018. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/G73MY

โ€œExxonโ€™s actions are not the pattern of a company hiding the practical challenges of climate change from investors or the public, as has been alleged in lawsuits. The company has merely insisted on as much scientific accuracy as possible in establishing this link and in designing and implementing policies to address the phenomenon,โ€ Johnson added.26โ€œExxon Turns Tables on Liberal Climate Bullies,โ€ Newsmax, January 17, 2018. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/G73MY

In conclusion he said โ€œExxon deserves praise for fighting back with facts and turning the tables on its liberal bullies and exposing their hypocrisy. Only an honest debate will yield practical responses to climate change.โ€27โ€œExxon Turns Tables on Liberal Climate Bullies,โ€ Newsmax, January 17, 2018. Archived December 13, 2019. August 1, 2016

In a Daily Caller article, Johnson claimed โ€œgreen groups such as the Natural Resources Defense Council have been irresponsibly vilifying biomass as environmentally disastrous.โ€28โ€œOn Biomass Energy, Green Activists Miss The Forest For The Trees,โ€ The Daily Caller, August 1, 2016. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.fo URL: https://archive.ph/GlY5R

โ€œTheir misinformation campaigns arenโ€™t just dishonest; they goes against the interests of our climate, our forests and our economy,โ€ Johnson declared.29โ€œOn Biomass Energy, Green Activists Miss The Forest For The Trees,โ€ The Daily Caller, August 1, 2016. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.fo URL: https://archive.ph/GlY5R

โ€œAnother environmentalist fib about wood pellets us that they generate more CO2 emissions than coal. In truth, wood pellets actually deliver significant carbon savings. When wood pellets are used for energy, the released carbon is almost completely reabsorbed by trees.โ€30โ€œOn Biomass Energy, Green Activists Miss The Forest For The Trees,โ€ The Daily Caller, August 1, 2016. Archived December 13, 2019. Archive.fo URL: https://archive.ph/GlY5R

โ€œThe incremental government takeover of the Internet is one of the greatest challenges of our time,โ€ Johnson said in a statement. โ€œAmericans are rightly concerned about net neutrality, data privacy, online free speech and the growth of municipal controlled broadband. I look forward to being at the forefront of these issues and challenging Washingtonโ€™s power grab of the Internet and preserve it as a free and open place for ideas and commerce.โ€33John Eggerton. โ€œProtect Internet Freedom Names Drew Johnson Executive Director,โ€ Broadcasting+Cable, April 22, 2016. August 2013

Johnson was fired from a job at the Chattanooga (Tenn.) Times Free Press when he changed the headline of his story without editorial permission. He had titled his story, critical of Obama, โ€œTake your jobs plan and shove it, Mr. President: Your policies have harmed Chattanooga enough.โ€ The paper commented that the content of his editorial was not at issue:36โ€œFree Press editorial page editor no longer with Times Free Press,โ€ Chattanooga Times Free Press, August 1, 2013. Archived December 12, 2019. Archive.ph URL: https://archive.ph/hhy2W

โ€œThe headline was inappropriate for this newspaper. It was not the original headline approved for publication, and Johnson violated the normal editing process when he changed the headline. The newspaperโ€™s decision to terminate Johnson had nothing to do with the content of the editorial, which criticized the presidentโ€™s job creation ideas and Chattanoogaโ€™s Smart Grid. The Free Press page has often printed editorials critical of the president and his policies,โ€ the paper wrote.37โ€œFree Press editorial page editor no longer with Times Free Press,โ€ Chattanooga Times Free Press, August 1, 2013. Johnson later went on Fox News to claim he was fired because the paper was pressured by Obama supporters, and that he would never have been fired for criticizing a Republican.38โ€œWriter fired for anti-Obama editorial speaks out,โ€ Fox News, August 2, 2013. Archived .mp4 on file at DeSmog.
