From fake news to phony Twitter support, 2016 was dominated by plenty of falsities surrounding climate change and energy development. DeSmog remains dedicated to uncovering this misinformation โ and disinformation โ clouding the national conversation on climateย change.
Weโve put together a list of 12 of our most important and influential stories coveringย these issues from the lastย year.
In addition to shining a light on whatโs false, we also seek to reveal whatโs true: the enduring dark money influence of the Koch brothers, the international military ties of the firms policing the Dakota Access pipeline, the differences between the trains carrying ethanol and the โbomb trainsโ carryingย oil.
We also keep close tabs on the individuals and organizations that have helped to delay and distract the public and our elected leaders from taking needed action to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and fight global warming (though sometimes those are our electedย leaders).

Nineteen U.S.ย Senators who understand the need to clear theย PRย pollution that continues to block overdue climate policy action spoke out on the Senate floor in support of theย Senate Web of Denial Resolutionย calling out the destructive forces of fossil fuel industry-fundedย climateย denial.
3.ย New Koch-Funded Group โFueling US Forwardโ Aims to Promote the โPositivesโ of Fossilย Fuels
A long-awaitedย campaign to rebrand fossil fuels calledย Fuelingย U.S.ย Forwardย made its public debut atย theย Red State Gathering 2016, whereย the organization’s President andย CEOย Charles Drevnaย gave attendees the inside scoop on the effort, and confirmed that the campaign is backed financially byย Kochย Industries.ย
TigerSwan is one of several security firmsย under investigationย for its work guarding the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota while potentially without a permit. Besides this recent work on the Standing Rock Siouxย protests in North Dakota, this companyย has offices in Iraq and Afghanistan and is run by a special forcesย Armyย veteran.
Afterย Kenneth Boneย asked aย questionย about energy to presidentialย nominees Donald Trump andย Secretary Hillary Clinton at the presidential town hall debate on October 9, he quickly became aย viral internet sensation.ย Lost in the shuffle of theย viral memes,ย internet jokes,ย and aย Facebook fan pageย is a basic question: Who is Ken Bone and what does he do forย aย living?ย
6.ย Did an Industry Front Group Create Fake Twitter Accounts to Promote the Dakota Accessย Pipeline?
A DeSmog investigation has revealed the possibility thatย a front group supporting theย controversial Dakota Access Pipelineย (DAPL) โ theย Midwest Alliance for Infrastructure Now (MAIN)ย โ may have created fake Twitter profiles, known by some as โsock puppets,โ to convey a pro-pipeline message over social media. Andย MAINย may be employingย theย PRย services of the firmย DCIย Group, which has connections to theย Republican Party, in orderย toย doย so.ย
7.ย The Trump Administration Is Filling Up With Kochย Allies
On the campaign trail, President-electย Donald Trumpย boasted that he hadย no need for the Koch brothers, claiming to have rejected meetings with them andย calling his Republican primary opponents โpuppetsโย for meeting with theย Kochs. Yet, today, Trump’s transition team and Cabinet areย quickly filling with a number of Koch affiliates, confidantes, andย businessย associates.
8.ย Senator Promoting Dakota Access Pipeline Invests In Bakken Oil Wells Named After Indianย Tribe
U.S.ย Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) recentlyย came out in supportย of theย Dakota Access pipeline, the contestedย Energy Transfer Partners-owned pipelineย envisionedย to move oil obtained viaย hydraulic fracturing (โfrackingโ)ย from North Dakota’sย Bakken Shaleย basin.ย What Sen. Hoevenย โ anย outspoken supporterย of TransCanada’sย Keystoneย XLย tar sands pipeline โ did not mention, however, is his personal investment in 68 different oil-producing wells in North Dakota under the auspices of the companyย Mainstream Investors,ย LLC.
The most popular climate change story across social media in the second half of 2016 used a debunked survey from the late 1990s to claim that โtens of thousands of scientistsโ had declared global warming a โhoax,โ a DeSmog analysisย hasย found.
10.ย โThere is no doubtโ: Exxon Knew CO2 Pollution Was A Global Threat By Lateย 1970s
Throughout Exxonโs global operations, the company knew thatย CO2 was a harmful pollutant in the atmosphere years earlier than previously reported. DeSmogย uncovered Exxon corporate documents from the late 1970s stating unequivocally โthere is no doubtโ thatย CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels was a growing โproblemโ well understood withinย theย company.
11.ย Bomb Trains: What Can We Learn From Shipping Ethanol to Improve Oil-By-Railย Safety?
From 2010 to 2015, the total number of tank cars moving ethanolย by rail was more than 1.98 million.ย That’s about 18 percentย greaterย than the more than 1.68 millionย tank cars of crude oil shipped over the same time period.ย With more ethanolย than crude oilย moved by railย in recent years, why isn’t anyone calling ethanol trains โbombย trainsโย too?
